Our Patron Saint, St. Drogo, was a Flemish noble born in 1105. His father died before he was born and his mother passed away during childbirth. When St. Drogo learned of his mother’s death, he felt responsible and became a penitential pilgrim as a teenager. He eventually became a shepherd, traditionally in Sebourg, France. One story claims, that while he was a shepherd, he discovered the coffee bean because of his sheep. Another says he could bilocate. Witnesses claimed that he would be both at the church, ringing bell for Mass, and yet out in the pastures, tending his sheep.
While on a pilgrimage, St. Drogo contracted a bodily infection which caused a terrible, deformed appearance. This frightened the villagers and a cell was built for him in his twenties to keep out of sight from others. The cell was attached to the village’s church with only a small window for him to receive the Eucharist and food. He remained in the cell for the rest of his life where he survived on barley, water, and the Holy Eucharist. St. Drogo is the patron of coffee and coffee shops owners.
Drogo’s will be closed from November 23 - December 1 for CU’s Thanksgiving Break.
